Finding your Nature through food

The way we produce food and feed ourselves has far-reaching effects on both us and our planet. Our actions can destroy habitats or create diverse cultural landscapes with ecosystem services. Our meal preparation methods, eating habits, and associated rituals are intricately woven into our culture. Food forms a link between all living things, and meals serve as a means of exchange and knowledge transfer.

Within the framework of the Netzwerk Naturwissen we would like to get to the bottom of these aspects during a common meal. Our goal is to find out where our food comes from, how the producers think about it and ultimately how the culture of meals is linked to our understanding of nature.

We would like to propose a hands-on outdoor experiment that will evoke both sensory and intellectual impressions and stimulate interaction and discussion. This experiment will take place in Rühstädt, an idyllic place in Brandenburg, embedded in the historical culture and the river landscape of the Elbe. Divided into about five working groups, we will visit different production sites and farms to pick up food directly from the producers for our meal. Our goal is to gain deeper understanding of how people connect to their products, how they are made, and what ingredients are used in our meal. We will meet at the NABU Visitor* Center to cook and eat a meal together. Our ambition is to collect the results of our focused ethnographic investigation and to develop common concepts related to food production, food culture and sensory perception of nature. During the experiment we will be accompanied by an experienced documentary filmmaker. Everyone who is interested in this experiment and enthusiastic about the topic is cordially invited.

This project was developed within the framework of the Netzwerk Naturwissen, an initiative of the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin and its partners from Berlin and Brandenburg.

The sub-project "Finding your nature through food" was created through the collaboration of Dr. Jan Dierks (NABU-Besucher*innenzentrum Rühstädt), Dr. Martin Reich (BIOCOM AG), Andrea Florez Jurado (Futurium) and Dr. Guillaume Dupont-Nivet (GFZ Helmholtz-Zentrum Potsdam).
