Tiger on the Rocks (C. Vasseleu, 2022) is a documentary that explores the liveliness of the extinct thylacine (Tasmanian Tiger) and its often unrecognized Indigenous histories. As such it will provide a discussion stimulus to consider the ways in which museums can respond to the politics of exhibiting the extinct, the cultural worlds that the specimens emerge from and the colonial histories that often frame them.

Responding to the film, Katrina Schlunke (University of Tasmania) and Anja Schwarz (University of Potsdam) will report on two research projects that engage with the MfN’s Australian collections: "Beyond Extinction: Reconstructing the Global Thylacine (Tasmanian Tiger) Archive" (funded by the Australian Research Council) and "Berlin's Australian Archive" (funded by the German Lost Art Foundation).
